A closed stance gets you
‘chasing’ down the line

I hit the ball best when I have the feeling of the right side of my body firing hard through impact as the left side gets out of the way. The drill you see here goes a long way towards giving me that feeling in my swing – that's why I spend so much time practising it.
In fact, my good friend Mark McNulty often plays all of his clubs with a slightly closed stance, because he feels that doing so helps to guard against moving the hips out of the way too quickly on the downswing.

The key to the drill is again to focus on swinging through the ball, not viciously at it. And when you do so, because the ball is forward in your stance, you will get a terrific feeling of ‘chasing’ after it with the right shoulder. Try to keep the left side of your body quiet as you feel yourself turning your right shoulder over the ball. Your goal is to enjoy a free-wheeling sensation as you sweep through impact to produce a string of crisply-struck, wonderfully straight shots.

HOW TO... Rehearse the closed-stance drill

Take your regular stance, but adjust it by moving your left foot a little closer to the ball and slightly behind it

As you pull your right foot back, your hips will be slightly shut, but make sure that your shoulders are square to your target line

Sense that your lower body is passive as you focus on turning your shoulders to create a solid swing
