Create
width, freedom and feel
with the right hand
One of the things I look for in my swing is to keep the
right hand and the clubface in perfect plane throughout. I get
a great sense of feel in the right hand, and I play my best golf
when it can be seen to reflect the position of the clubface
a checkpoint I look for chiefly at the top of the backswing. I
can rip through the ball with confidence when my right hand is
in sync with the clubface.
Making swings with the right hand only is a drill I do regularly,
not only to make sure of this relationship [between hand and clubface]
but also because it is a great exercise through which to enjoy
the feeling of freedom and release on the downswing.
Heres how to do it. Assume your normal address position,
but grip down the club a little with the right hand and put your
left hand in your pocket or on your left hip. Then go ahead and
make a few trial swings to feel exactly what the right hand and
arm are doing. Swing the club back to the top, allowing the wrist
to set, or cock, at the top, and then let it swing through, without
trying to force things or hit too hard. If you feel confident
enough to give it a go, tee up a ball and hit a few shots with
a short iron. Placing the ball on a tee will encourage you to
swing through impact and not hit at the ball. That quality is
really what this drill is designed to teach you, and the momentum
you create will take you all the way to a nice full finish.
Adding the left hand to the grip then involves the entire left
side of the body and in the swing itself thats where the
bulk of your power comes from. But Im a right-handed player
and I like to feel and develop this right-hand control....next
