To max out your clubhead speed,
crack the whip through impact
OF ALL THE VARIOUS ASPECTS
OF Vijay Singh’s swing – his
grace and flow, his huge turn and body rotation, his strength,
his effortless power, his ball control – the one thing that
grabs my attention is his release of the club through impact.
As you can see in the photo here, Singh’s right hand comes
almost completely off the grip just after impact Only his fingertips
stay in contact with the club.
Is this a position that average golfers should try to emulate?
Strictly speaking, no. But the ball is already gone at this point,
and what it shows is the tremendous acceleration and freewheeling
move of the clubhead as the hands slow down. It’s like cracking
a whip, so much so that the speed of the release does not allow
the
right hand to stay fully on the club.
Most golfers tighten up when they swing down to impact, trying
to over-control the club to hit the ball and thus impeding acceleration
and accuracy. Next time you play, lighten your grip pressure,
soften and relax your arms, and let the club fly.
