Through
the season I work on a number of different things.
Right now I’m really working hard on finding
my tempo. Sometimes, when I’ve been hitting
a lot of balls on the range, I find that my tempo
suffers. That’s something you have to be careful
of, particularly if through the winter you practise
a lot but don’t actually play very often. You
can get too quick when you take your ‘range
game’ out to the course. So I’ve been
trying to slow my swing down quite a bit. For me,
and probably for you, that’s always a good thought.
On a specific note, I am aware that I do have a tendency
to move laterally too much, so I always have to watch
for that. I am trying to turn and stay ‘within’
myself more, so that I finish nice and straight. The
ideal swing thought for me is to finish straight on
the left side when I’m done. I have to watch
that I don’t finish in a reverse-C shape, which
occurs when the hips are working too fast and too
much towards the target coming down, causing the hands
to fall behind my body. When that happens you either
lose it out to the right or flip the hands through
the ball and hit it left.
So those are two things I constantly have to work
on. I want rotary motion in my hips and torso (not
a slide towards the target) and I want to keep it
fairly slow. Other than that I really focus on the
basics. I like everything to be comfortable and orderly
at the set-up. I always try to picture the shot in
my mind, and when I see it I then rely on feelings
to make it happen. When I’m playing well I don’t
think about anything technical to do with my swing.
It’s more important to just visualise the ‘play’
and do it. I am lucky in that I have good fundamentals.
My coach, Henri Reis, has been with me since I was
a junior in Sweden. I see him about eight times a
year and we reinforce all the things that we know
work well for me. He’s not just my swing coach,
I also do a lot of short- game work with him. But
the basics are there and that’s why I am able
to repeat my swing and trust it.
For you, I’d say the best thing is a simple
concept of the swing. As I look at this sequence I’m
not seeing a lot of hinges and angles here and there.
It’s natural. Mistakes come when you are being
too complicated. I try to stand up to every club in
the bag and make the same swing. If I need to hit
it farther, I use another club. The game’s tough
enough without changing your swing every time you
stand up to the ball.
